October heralds the start of several months of charity-based campaigns – Stoptober and Dryanuary to name just two. Both campaigns have a detrimental effect on the viability of our pubs and clubs by encouraging people to either reduce the amount of drinking they do or abstain altogether.
Luckily, some forward-thinking people have, in the past, launched counter campaigns to encourage and support the hospitality industry. Tryanuary encourages the drinker to search out and try new beers and beer styles. February is aimed at supporting the smaller and local breweries.
The Blue Bear, in Abbey Street, has become the latest addition to the Nuneaton & Bedworth pubs who have joined CAMRA’s LocAle scheme. In a move to offer their customers a change from the predominant Marston's and Greene King presence in the area they have taken the move to stock beers from the local Church End brewery.
LocAle is a CAMRA initiative that promotes pubs stocking locally brewed real ale in order to reduce the number of ‘beer miles’ from brewery to pub cellar and is based on growing consumer demand and an increasing awareness of environmental issues. CAMRA branches around the country can award accreditation to any pubs that regularly stock at least one locally produced real ale. Some of the benefits of stocking locally produced real ale in local pubs includes:
– pubs can attract more visitors through their doors, including tourists.
– consumers can enjoy greater beer choice and diversity.
– local brewers are supported with increased sales.
– local economy is supported as more money is generated and spent locally.
– fewer beer miles means less impact on the environmental.
Still exist for the following:
Pubs Officer(s) – to liaise with ALL publicans in the branch area and update CAMRA’s Pub database.
GBG (Good Beer Guide) Co-Ordinator – to ensure CAMRA’s pub database is up to date.
Social Secretary – to organize and publicize branch social events and monthly meetings.
